A man has been shot dead at Hamilton South overnight.
Emergency services were called to a unit on Fowler Street after reports of a shooting and arrived to find a man at the front door of the premises suffering a gunshot wound to the chest.
The 57-year-old man was treated by paramedics but died at the scene.
Newcastle police established Strike Force Alcheringa to investigate the circumstances surrounding the man’s death and initial inquiries suggest the incident was targeted.
One other person was inside the unit at the time of the shooting, they were unharmed and placed the call to emergency services. They have since been assisting police.
Homicide squad detectives are being brought in to unravel the facts surrounding the fatal shooting.
No arrests have been made at this stage.
As investigations continue, detectives are urging anyone who may have seen or heard anything in the nearby vicinity or who may have dashcam footage between 10.30pm and 11.30pm either on Fowler, Hassall or Darling Streets or Glebe Road to come forward.
