The NSW government is unlocking more land for housing in Newcastle and Sydney.
Plans to deliver up to 1,100 new dwellings by redeveloping state-owned properties were unveiled today following an audit of the government’s under-utilized or vacant assets.
500 homes including social and affordable housing has been earmarked for state-owned land at the old Stockton Centre Site.
The site will be transferred to Homes NSW to deliver the properties which will be developed by Landcom or in partnership with the private sector.
Meanwhile, details around the mix of social and affordable homes will be confirmed in the coming months.
Member of Newcastle, Tim Crakanthorp says, he’s happy to see more housing delivered in the local area.
“Newcastle is currently experiencing a housing crisis, and we desperately need more supply. This area is perfect for more housing for local families,” Mr Crakanthorp says.
“As previously announced, the NSW Government is currently transforming some of the homes at the Stockton Centre into accommodation for people in search of short-term emergency housing.
We are exploring different options for the long-term future use of the Stockton Centre site as it was announced as one of the 10, tranche 2 land audit sites today.
As a father of four I would love to see my kids be able to stay in Newcastle, buy a home and raise a family of their own here.”
It’s the only one here in Newcastle with nine of the ten locations identified in across Sydney.
It forms part of the state government’s commitment in the recent budget to deliver up to 30,000 well-located homes, close to infrastructure and transport, through a $5.1 billion investment in new public housing.
