A Hunter man has become one of the first people to cop the new $5,000 fine for spitting on emergency service workers.
At about 6:45pm last night, Port Stephens police responded to a domestic incident at a home on Eucalyptus Crescent, Metford.
They spoke to two men, and arrested one of them before the 36-year-old allegedly punched a male constable in the head.
The older man, aged 62, then allegedly pushed, hit and spat at a female constable in the chest before he was also arrested.
They’ve both been charged with multiple offences including assaulting police, while the older man was also issued a $5,000 fine under the Public Health Act.
They’ve been refused bail and will front Newcastle Court today.
